And the Award For…

the “Today’s Worst Blog Post” goes to…. News.com!
I was browsing the web, as usually, and stumbled upon this post at CNET’s News.com. In it Caroline McCarthy points out that a TechCrunch spelled BitTorrent wrong a few times. Zing!
The post goes on to say that “We’ll forgive Mr. Arrington for this one and spare him any jabs that involve removing one of the r’s from his own name. After all, it’s morning, and when I don’t have enough coffee in the morning I do dumb things like confuse TypePad with MovableType.” So what’s the point? To try to get TechCrunch to link to your blog and to start a web duel that might give a little attention to CNET’s own blogs?
The irony of this last comment does not go unnoticed, writes in his personal blog, “That’s ok, I can take a jab from them. While CNET writers were all cozy in bed last night, Om and I were competing to break the Bittorent story. That’s why blogs will win, and CNET will lose.” Personally, I see typographical mistakes as totally insignificant and just a fact of life when you don’t have a copy editor. Spelling a word or two wrong does not mean a story was not researched well or that it does not have merit- things like this are simply one way big media like CNET is trying to combat smaller, more agile, and increasingly popular sites like TechCrunch.
Another example- I don’t have a full-floor office on 28th street in Manhattan, like CNET does. Does this- or my lack of a copy editor- make what I say less important?
