That’s right, it’s all over. The free 1and1.com shared Professional Package hosting package that so many people signed up for three years ago ends tomorrow.

The packages where originally given out, one per email account, to whoever wanted one. This gave free, relatively high quality hosting to a LOT of people (though probably less than it would seem since so many people signed up for multiple accounts). I am guessing that a lot of these sites are not longer used, but more than a few people are going to be scrambling to find hosting for their personal sites now. Luckily 1and1 offers packages starting at just $2.99 a month so new hosting won’t break the bank ($3.99 for the same package, according to the email).

Personally I never liked 1&1, but how can you complain about free 99.99% hosting? Or what they now offer- 2 domain names, 100 GB web space, 1,000 e-mail accounts, and 1,000 GB traffic for 5 bucks a month? Even factoring in their horrible control panel (which I have not used in two years, so it might have improved), that is pretty OK for small business site or personal homepage.

I can’t say I took full advantage of the preview, I immediately put up one site and forgot about it later that week, but it was nice while it lasted. It would be interesting to see how many people sign back up with them…
