In case you have not been reading your gaming news you may be interested to learn that another Elder Scrolls will be upon us quite soon. If you are anything like me, your response to this is, “Have we not been punished enough?”

I beat Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in the weeks right after it was released and I have trouble believing how anyone could still be interested in this game. Oblivion’s hack-n-slash fun last for about 8 hours, after which it become insanely repetitive and the game had very little else to offer. I admit I had a good time at first, but the monotony of Oblivion was such that I don’t know how I managed to make it through the rest of the game. In retrospect, it was probably just a failed attempt at getting my money’s worth…

This game is just too limited to stay fun for more than few hours, let alone it’s “open ended” game play. As you get further in the game you become more proficient at the same skills and pick up a few more powerful weapons and spells, but very else changes. The open style of the map is in many ways a good thing, but if early in the game you want to explore a bit there is a good chance that you will stumble upon the same places you will have to go later on so even an adventurous spirit is be punished.

I don’t know what Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Shivering Isles is going to bring to the table except to satiate the super-fans, but I guess we will all find out on March 26th. This expansion is slated to bring about 30 hours of play time, which probably means that there will be a few new monsters, an few new weapons, and maybe- cross those fingers- some new armor. Even the prospect of new armor is not very alluring because I seem to remember getting brand new dragon scale armor, which I used for about 3 minutes before I uninstalled the game, after beating the final boss.

You can play Shivering Isles with your old character so there is no reason to start over, but given the amount of time invested in that one character who would even consider starting over and playing the game again, as we were clearly intended to do.

More bad news- if you want to play the game on Xbox 360 you will need Xbox Live and an internet connection, because it is download only.

There is a lot of information available in case you want to learn more about the game but after my experience with Oblivion I can’t see it being worth the time. I am more open to a good RPG game that the high majority of the gamers out there, but the mindless quests, ridiculously easy battles, and thankless goals of Elder Scrolls IV have killed any chances of me getting into the series again.

Lastly, and this is probably just me being overly critical, but could this name be any worse? I’ll be the first to admit that Oblivion sounds cool, but Shivering Isles? Sounds like the sequel to Blades of Steel (a much better game)…

I think you whine right now, like a litle girl. this is something non-superfans enjoy as well! i know people who doesn’t know what morrowind even is, and they love it! Maybe it doesnt fit for you, but for me, who is tired of online roleplaying, enjoy this open game really much!

once uv dun all the missions and seen everything in oblivion it dus get dull but all games do there is some very kewl things hidden in caves and ruins u’ll be surprised wat u can find hidden beyond the obcious veil of the world of oblivion by the way u talk u sound like u were critical of it before you even got the game and if u believe adventurin is too dull then modders can help such as martigens and francescos mods which triple the amnt of items creatures and likely hood of stumbling across them the main quests are merely a taster of the amount of gameplay oblivion has to offer and shivering isles is adding more armour weapons npcs quests and creatures aswell as a much more weird and weird fantasy world of madness with its own unique places and quests and i for one am looking forward to exploring this far more elaborate extension of oblivion

I agree with crazy with every word he’s sed. U whiner! You say it as though you havn’t really been through every/most quests. most of them are interesting and hardly repetitive.

    8 hours huh??

I hate gamers that play like that, this whole blog seems like it was created to simply beat the game rather than enjoy it, then complain about it.

Crazy has a point, there is tons available in the modding department. Don’t like that either well you can try modding yourself, but I get the feeling that will just end up a list of complaints to santa as well.

I find that game amazing, pity I don’t have a better video card. Granted that and set aside, the main story line does tag along quiet fast. Assuming you ignore the detail and either follow game guides or go by cheats then yes its pretty boring that way.

I think your being too critical of the game yes it can be repetitive find another dungon kill creatures find items leave and repeat some where else and the same can be said about the fighting move in circle around target so they cant hurt you and block and slash. However Oblivion is the first game i found that is so open to adventuring type of gamers and differnt types of game play most other games punish those who have differnt playing styles because of not understanding or not being complicated another scripts to pull of required actions and reactions.

The only reason you found it boring was because by the sound of it you played the game like it was on some kind of time trial mde.

The point is you dont have to run off and finish the game in a couple of hours this isnt a first person shooter. It’s you that have to keep the game varied and fun by doing differnt types of quests rather than the game Its like just playing a single game for years on end and then moaning about how the gameplay is the same .well yeah of course it’s because it’s up to the player to look for and find the enterainment they like and as i said eairler varied to avoid boredom.
