Media Temple Grid Version 1.2 Days Away

As of Friday March 2nd Media Temple will begin to run an upgraded version of the Grid hosting service. Version 1.2 (GMR v.1.2) is the latest improvement to the Grid, the most significant being the use of MySQL Grid containers, or private MySQL containers for each account.
Other improvements coming to this $20 a month service are more processing power (now over 800 cores), better email, improved FTP, faster storage performance, higher network speed, and more. Overall the upgrade should greatly improve the hosting experience, not just through better serving, but also through better back-end performance and improved controls.
As for future upgrades, MT had this to say: “GMR (v.1.3) is already in development and its release cycle is expected to be much shorter than (GMR v1.1) to (GMR v1.2).” Great news…

I really hope that this is true. I just switched to Media Temple 2 weeks ago and their service is awful. I don’t use a lot of bandwidth so far, around 1-1.5gb per day on average. My site has been down due to timing out, failed DB connection or just a flat out failed connection at least a few times a day. The only reason I am still with them is because it has been 2 weeks and I just moved everything over, so I would rather wait a few more weeks to see if service improves. But hands down, their customer service is garbage. Of course, if the service was good, I wouldn’t need any anyway.
This blog on the Grid and I have not gotten any db connection problems at all, at least in the past few weeks. As for completely failed connections, that is really weird, you may want to get in touch with tech support and have them look at a traceroute or something like that…
As for tech support response time, yeah, they are slow. This is my biggest problem with them so far. Anyone know if it faster if you move to a dedicated virtual (dv) account?

Hi Sal,
How any updates of the overall performance of the (GMR v.1.2) you are using now?
Thanks
Hey forrest-
The Grid has been going well lately, at least for me. I still have latency issues (but I think that is not a problem with MT and I have to do a traceroute with their tech support), but performance past that as been great. The service is rock solid and it has stood up to a Digg as well as hosting images for some major traffic to my other site.

I would say everything is doing really well and you should have no complaints. If you are a high demand user though you will want to upgrade to a MySQL container. It starts at $20 a month, which will double your price which is not cool, but if you have a really db intensive site and are doing big traffic it could be worth it.
Thank for sharing Sal
