Gmail Error Update

The usual fixes for Gmail errors recommended by the message board (see previous post) make it seem like not being able to access Gmail is a local issue. This problem may have stemmed from something with their servers, but we were led to believe that the problem was, at least after a few minutes, on our side.

Well, this time it seems to be different. I still can’t log in and other people are experiencing the same issues. It seems like Gmail is experiencing pretty large-scale outage.

Here is the Gmail is Down page or you can find more info at Gmail Help > Problem Solving.

In addition to posting on that last link I sent message to the Gmail team through and online form. I got
an unhelpful auto-responder message:

Hello,Thanks for your report. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience...

Edit- 12:55pm - There are reports on the Gmail is Down board that Gmail for Google Apps Premium
is also down for some people! I have not been able to confirm this.

Also, at 11:44am I got an email from Google saying:

Thank you for your report. We are aware of this problem, and our engineers are
working diligently to find a solution. We apologize for any inconvenience this
issue may have caused.

Sincerely,
The Google Team

So looks like they are working on it… I was able to login to Gmail using mail.google.com/mail/h/ for about 2 minutes and I saw that my mail was there along with some new items. I was unable to view any of the items or my drafts. All my other Google services are unaffected.

Edit- 1:05pm- Finally, Google speaks

Hi all,
We are aware of the issues a small sub-set of our users are
experiencing when logging in and sending messages. Rest assured that
our engineering team is working diligently to resolve these errors. We
appreciate your patience.

Please refer back to this thread for updates as they become available.

Thanks,
Gmail Guide

Edit- 3:29pm- No progress. The Gmail Guide has only posted once again on the Google is Down board, though the topic is up to 192 posts. A lot of people are really unhappy, and it’s showing on the discussion board. It looks like the issue is starting to get some recognitition in the blogosphere: here, here, LAist, and even on Digg. Most people are reporting the issue starting at about the same time- around 1am EST last night, give or take an hour- though most did not realize until this morning.

Edit- 4:36pm- After reading a nother of reports on the semi-official thread, it looks like Gmail is back up, at least partially. I tried and got a 767 error and then cleared my cache and noticed my Google Personalized Homepage Gmail widget worked! I tried Gmail again… success! I have not received any of my mail from today, but it seems like it is on the way and will be delivered soon. The last two pieces of mail I got were received at 2am and then I got one at 7:04am, but nothing until then. I just emailed my server from the Gmail account (normally takes just a few seconds) and it worked perfectly. Incoming email is still delayed and overall operation is slow and spotty. One error I noticed is that outgoing mail is sent but not added to the sent box, at least not yet.

Edit- 9:21am Day Two- Some time between about 1am and 9am all my late email arrived. Gmail is back to operating at 100%. Some explanation would be nice… At 7pm Google Guide reported that “This issue should now be resolved. However, some users may continue to experience message delivery delays as the backlog is cleared”, that was their last message from what I have found.

They’re probably pretty busy fixing the system, so I wouldn’t expect more than an auto-responder message…

Since there are reports that gmail works in some locations and not in others maybe it’s a DNS prob. Can anyone who has working gmail post the gmail IP address?

  3. on 01 Mar 2007 at 10:54 am Sal Cangeloso

Actually I can access some accounts right now, but not my main one, so it does not seem like a DNS issue…

“I saw that my mail was there along with some new items. ”

This makes me feel a little less worried now. I was worried that my all mail might have gone.

Zero- yea, I was really relieved. I mean, I am still concerned though- I was unable to get to my saved drafts or even read the new email! I have all my email backed up, but I still really rely on my gmail account…

I have the Premiere Service from gmail, and got the same response. I know its unlikely, but i also have a user here that is not getting any email to his mac.com account, maybe it is related and some sort of attack? Is anyone else having trouble with mac aaccounts?

No issues here for my GMail or Google Apps hosted domain.

I have a google apps account with only two users. One user can login fine and the other user can’t. Very weird. It’s the ad supported version, not the premium one.

    To All,

I was having problems here in South Louisiana, Baton Rouge to be specific, earlier this morning but now that it is almost 1400 hours here, all is well with GMail just to let you know. All of my GMail problems are fixed and moving at quite a clip now that it is fixed.

    Peace Out……

I’ve been having problems logging on, receiving the same error messages that you all have been getting.

I was able to log-in once, for a few minutes, and noticed that emails that I KNOW have been sent were not in my mailbox. Also, I was not able to open any mail even though my Gchat was working.

I asked a friend to log in from a different computer to confirm whether or not it was a problem with my computer or network. Alas, she had the same problems.

This is a GMAIL issue. Lets hope they solve it.

Glad people are posting the issue in there blogs but give google a break as well. At least they actually respond to peoples problems on a more personal level than most companies. In fact a lot of companies would deny there was a problem. Don’t take my comment the wrong way. Just don’t want this problem to turn into a big bitch fest about google.

I thought I was the only one having difficulty accessing gmail. I initially thought that it was because of some incompatibility problem with Vista. I just recently shifted to the OS. But a friend of mind told me that maybe it’s a DNS problem rather than a compatibility issue. I agree with her since I already have all the Vista drivers that I need (from http://www.radarsync.com/vista). I’m able to access it sometimes, but still getting some errors especi8ally during the mornings.

Hello, I get errors, 766, 767, 502.. not having fun here. Getting married on July 7th and people are supposed to reply to my e-mails…Grrrr. hope I don’t lose any replies… deleted temp files, cookies and history and even tried other browsers even after shutting everything down and rebooting it, may 11, 2007, just started around 5:30pm, central time.

  24. on 24 Mar 2008 at 3:00 pm judy

Anyone experiencing “error 502″ today? Gmail seems to be shut down since approximately 11 AM on 3/24/08. Anyone have some info on this problem? Very frustrating as I can’t contact or receive contact from anyone on business or social matters.

  25. on 24 Mar 2008 at 3:17 pm Sal Cangeloso

I’ve had perfect gmail performance today. Have you tried clearing your cache? Any news on the Google msg boards?

  26. on 24 Mar 2008 at 3:30 pm Judy

Thanks for reply,Sal. Just got gmail back. Yes, I had cleared my cache, but had no news from gmail. All seems to be OK now - -

  27. on 16 Jul 2008 at 2:14 pm Globetrotter

Unfortunately, GMail’s 502 error is back. I have not been able to access my GMail account for about 20 hours now. It’s my primary email account so it’s been frustrating, to say the least.
A few others have posted the same error problem on Google’s Groups but the problem persists. :(
