BitTorrent Optimization

TorrentFreak has a pretty cool article on a BitTorrent optimization calculator. The tool is not particularly great but it does help with laying out the basics for working with Azureus. It is getting pretty good press today so hopefully it actually helps out.
The settings it calls far are a bit out of whack from what I have seen, but it is not something I have experimented with as much as should have. It calls for the max upload speed to be about 80% of your maximum download speed, which seems high, but I guess if you have a high speed connection it will be okay. The test results will be heavily dependent on your bandwidth test so you should try out a few of those before settling on what you think is your download speed.
The calculator is based on a very simple formula and it does not take many factors into account, which I see as troublesome. I would not rely on it too much, but it could be useful for some tweaking. From what I have experienced setting your ports up properly is the most important setting to make when trying to optimize BitTorrent. The Azureus community has a lot of great information available that I would highly recommend for anyone trying to get their torrents going as smoothly as possible.
