The New Dr. Grip Pens Arrive

I’ve been a big fan of Pilot Dr. Grip pens for years now and a few months ago I picked up my favorite one ever. It’s the Dr. Grip Center of Gravity, pictured above in clear/silver. For about 5 bucks at Staples, it was a great deal (came with a free refill). This is, from what I can tell, the US version of the Dr. Grip G-Spec White- at least the two seem the same.

I recently scored two new Dr. Grips though, the two at the top of the image. The red one is the Offroader, a shaker-style mechanical pencil, and the middle one is the 4+1, a multipen with a 0.5mm pencil. While the Center of Gravity is still my favorite, but I could not resist buying these despite not really being a fan of pencils or multipens.

The Offroader is the standard mechanical pencil with a new grip. The grip is hollowed out with little rubber bumps below it. The exterior is still the same, but because material was removed from the grey insert the overall effect is a softer grip. Not as soft as a Mitsubishi Alpha Gel, but there is some give to it. The pencil is a shaker so you can advance the lead by pressing the button or shaking the pencil up and down. The shaking moves a heavy metal collar inside the pencil and effectively presses the top, though there is no movement on the exterior. As for the new grip, it’s okay, nothing great. I do like the red/clear though.

Multipens are generally heavy, thick, and slightly awkward. The 4+1 is no different, but at least it has a comfortable, easy to hold grip. This area has almost no give because it does not have padding under it like the Center of Gravity, but it is still an improvement when compared to many other multipens. The four pens are green, red, blue, and black and the 0.5mm pencil is chosen by pushing down the pocket clip. There is a small eraser hidden under the cap and there is a nice metallic coating over the entire exterior.

So there are the two newest Dr. Grips to hit the US. I don’t know how long there have been available in other places, but these are the first that I have seen. I will not be giving up my normal Dr. Grip (that silver one at the top) any time soon, but at least I have a good pencil and multipen now.
