Best Post So Far Today…

Out of all the blog posts I read this morning, I have to say that Jason Calacanis is the big winner. He posted on his new rules for link-baiting, or basically the best ways to get him to link to your blog.

There are a number of rules in the post, but most have to do with you stroking his ego. Okay, I’m kidding, but so is he (kind of). My favorite recommendation: “DO lie and say we hung out one night back in the Silicon Alley days”.

When you have popular blog and you start to promote it by actively getting people to link to it (not just because of the content but because it means that they might get linked to) that blog is going to get bigger. John Chow has mastered this with his blog reviews but lots of other people do it. For example the best way to get on Techmeme is to be liberal about your links back to them and many bloggers regularly search for themselves on Google Blogsearch (probably Technorati too) and like to link back to those posted. I am pretty sure that Scoble has found his way to one or two of my posts this way.

This is a great way to increase the visibility of a blog, but it only works if you are big enough that people are going to be willing to work for a link.  It’s also a smart move, from an SEO standpoint, to ask them to use certain anchor text (preferably something that is a popular search term) for the links, but this is generally pushing things a bit far.

I am kind of wondering why Jason Calacanis would care about the size of his blog- it seems like it’s doing well and it does not generate income, but I guess everyone wants what they post to be read by as many people as possible.

By the way, if you are reading this and finding it extremely interesting you might want to check out my previous post, as it may be time to get a job…

Perhaps the deal with AOL was structured for so many properties with said traffic levels?

    –just rampant speculation

    Jason care to elaborate?
