UMPC News- Samsung Q1 Ultra

I know I have been writing about UMPCs a lot lately, which is strange given my lukewarm response to most of the products, but the ultra mobile PC scene has really been interesting lately. Companies are taking the hint and starting to make some changes to the devices that they could not originally force down the throats of consumers. I think the only company that really got the design right is Sony and their product has been way to expensive to get any real traction.

Samsung’s Q1 Ultra launch event is tomorrow, which is pretty exciting. I have not spent too much time with the Q1, but at first everyone was exciting because it was a Samsung and in addition to being a new design it is technically their only portable computer in the US market (Dell has rebranded some of their stuff in the past). The original Q1 was extremely bland and they did not do much to improve on the most basic slate-style UMPC, but the Ultra should help things out a bit. From what we have seen so far it will have a new user interface as well as be lighter than the previous models. Eventually they will be coming with a 32GB solid-state disk, which is an awesome move but will pump up the price considerably. I don’t think we will be seeing any of those tomorrow, but who knows, they might have a prototype lying around…
