It is pretty incredible to see all the problems people are having with the move to Vista. Matt Kohut over at Lenovo, someone who I know to be technically proficient, has a really interesting post over at Lenovo’s blogs concerning his move to Vista with his Thinkpad T60. He encounters a wide range of problems, some that are specific to Lenovo systems, but many that aren’t.

Despite all the troubles and a loss of one hour of battery life per charge (!) Matt is going to stick it out and not revert back to XP. He writes:

If you ask the question another way, “Since you’ve got an escape route back to XP, are you going back?”  No, I’m not.  Vista itself hasn’t made me more productive, but there is a lot to like about this operating system.  I just don’t consider it a compelling upgrade.

After reading the article it seems like the only reason he is not reverting back to XP (I would hesitate to call this “downgrading”) is because it took him so long to get Vista running. Matt points out how there is a lot to like about Vista, but does not mention anything specific. He might be referring to some of the new features, but he says he shut off Super Fetch and indexing, so he might just be acting impartial here. Like he says, it is not a compelling upgrade.

I’d love to see Lenovo systems running Ubuntu from the factory, but they have enough Linux support already that this does not have to be a major focus for them. The real goal of Thinkpad’s designers should be a notebook that is super stable, 100% ready for corporate security/management, and as problem-free as possible. Matt’s problems are not reflective of my experience with Thinkpad’s with factory-installed Vista but it is great to see that the people over there are doing their homework and taking part in real-world experiences and discussions. I really appreciate the transparency of someone at Lenovo coming out and taking about his own problems with Vista despite this being the up-and-coming OS and one that will account for a large part (though probably not the majority) of Thinkpad sales in 2007.
