GAIM out, Pidgin in

I finally gave my old version of GAIM the boot and upgraded to Pidgin today. I had been using GAIM 1.5 for a long time and I like it much better than any AIM client, but it has always had a few quirks that were really starting to get on my nerves.

The upgrade to Pidgin 2.1.0 was super fast and totally seamless, which is very much appreciate. The new UI is practically the same as before, though it’s a bit less stripped down and it runs more smoothly.  Finally I don’t have a separate open window for my away message!

My only problem so far with Pidgin is that is uses these green circles and clocks next to people’s screen names to indicate status. These really look bad and are totally unnecessary (or could at least use better icons), but I can’t seem to find a way to edit or remove them.

Anyway, the upgrade was worth the five minutes, though Pidgin 2.1.0 does not bring a lot to the table. For my money it’s still the best cross-platform IM client available.

Nice! I was just about to upgrade to the latest pidgin from 1.5 and wanted to make sure there were no quirks. Thanks.
