Digital Life 2007- Totally Forgettable

I spent today at NYC’s Digital Life, a sort of mini-CES at the Javits Center. It’s a small, strange event held at the start of the holiday season (the holiday season for marketers at least) that helps show off some products that will be available for Christmas as well as some of the companies that were displaced now that E3 is no longer.

The big news today was the Palm Centro and the Gateway One, neither of which were surprises and neither of which were really big news to big with. Past that it was just a couple of companies showing off their goods. Halfway through the “VIP Day” the show is open to general attendance (read: anyone off the street) and mayhem ensues. I am sure the companies appreciate a chance to show off their product to the people that will be buying them, not the same press people they talk to every week, but the atmosphere is not conducive to getting work done.

I think the biggest disappointment was that this years event was not any larger (it seemed smaller) that last years. There were no new faces, a number of companies dropped out, and a lot of people players only had a token setup, just to show there face.

The high point of the day was that I got to see Crysis be played in person for the first time. I could have played it but did not want to wait in line.

So if you are feeling bad about missing “New York Technology Week” don’t be. I am sure there were some events that were great, but the big one was, to put it kindly, lackluster. It was great to catch up with some people I know, as well as to meet some new people, but the show takes a relatively large, well-placed space and a great date and does not do a whole lot with it.
