Flash Not Working in Firefox?

If you are running Flash v 9.0.115.0 with Firefox 2.0.0.1.2 on Windows XP there is a chance that Flash is not working properly. You will know this because Flash videos (youtube, etc) will play for about two seconds, with no sound, and then just stop. Flash will function normally in Internet Explorer though.

This is a problem with Flash. The word is that it should be updated with the next version.

If you want the full explanation, read this thread. I just did, and I don’t recommend doing so.

If you want the fast and dirty way to fix it, here goes:

1) uninstall flash

2) install flash 9.0.47.0. Here is the page if you want it…

2a) you’ll have to reinstall Flash again for IE (but now that Firefox works properly again, you won’t really need IE will you?)

That’s it. Flash should work, but you will have an old version. When the next version comes out you might want to muster up the courage to upgrade, but bookmark this page just in case.

10/10/09 – UPDATE- If you are still having this problem, especially if you are using Firefox 3, then upgrade to Flash 10. This should solve almost all problems and it seems to have fixed my Flash issues.

Great Mike, glad to see this is helping out. It really got on my nerves for awhile before I decided to fix it.

Now I’m afraid to upgrade though- still running 9.0.47.0. Firefox is going to make the move to 2.0.0.13 next time I restart it…

I’m a big fan of firefox, but have had to dust off the cobwebs and return to IE when playing flash games since when using fox the games freeze for a few seconds and starts back up. I’ve tried reinstalling firefox(latest version) and flash player(latest version) and nothing helps. My system is XP.

This issue only appeared on my computer after I installed windows media player – all of a sudden i could only run flash files in IE!!!

Windows media player is somehow interfering with proper firefox operation.

I’m not a techie, but maybe somebody can figure it out from that angle.

I am still having this problem and, honestly, I just load up chrome when I want to do something in flash (videos, gaming, etc). Since my last comment I have upgraded Flash and I am now running Firefox 3.0.3.

Today or tomorrow, I am going to install Flash 10, which is available as of yesterday. I am very much hoping that this solves the problem.

Scott- I’m not sure how Windows Media Player would affect the issue that we are seeing. It shouldn’t be involved in playing Flash, so your problem might be a different issue altogether or it just might be a coincidence.

I’m running Firefox 3.0.3 and have Flash 10.0.r12.

I’ve searched again and again for a solution, looking for any old dll versions for Flash that Firefox may be using; nothing.

Firefox is clearly using an old version of Flash and not updating or using the version which appears in Add-Ons.

Flash files work except for anything that requires Flash v9.0.45 or higher. Firefox shows that I need to upgrade, which I’ve done and shows that I’ve done. Still, Firefox is pulling or using a plugin from an undisclosed location that I can’t find.

    Very frustrating!

Internet Explorer v7.0 has no problems; reads all the Flash files just fine.

    Hey Bart,
Are you doing the proper flash uninstall? http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157

    Some ideas:

1- go to about:plugins and make sure everything looks right, this has some good info available on the files that are installed.

2- Go to Tools > Add-ons > plugins. Disable Flash, close the browser and then enable it, this might fix things.

If none of those work, I’d start manually searching for dll files again.

btw- if you use Chrome- is that picking up Flash 10 or 9?

I’m running Firefox 3.0.3 and have Flash 10.0.r12… And Firefox keeps crashing, even when the open tabs don’t require Flash. I’ve disabled Flash, renabled it, unistalled it, reinstalled it… Nothing works. I regret ungrading Flash so much right now.

I’m running Firefox 3.0.4 and have Flash 10.0.r12… And Firefox keeps crashing, even when the open tabs don’t require Flash. I’ve disabled Flash, renabled it, unistalled it, reinstalled it… Nothing works. I regret upgrading Flash so much right now.

This is actually weird. I’ve got Firefox ver 3.5.5. I’m a developer and I have Adobe Flex Builder, Firebug addins installed in my PC, meaning I have the latest Flash Player installed and Javascript turned on but it seems like Firefox is ignoring it. Facebook say’s I need to install the latest version of Adobe Flash player. Now what??

The thing that is making all the headache is called “Allowed sites”.

You can find it if you click Tools – Options – Security – Exceptions and then you add adobe.com to your “Allowed sites” list.
